Regions

Our map will show you where the Kerala states are, and our our interactive map will show you a bit about each of the states of Kerala and where things are. In essence the 'regions of Kerala are the coast on the east facing the Arabian Sea and the highlands of the western Ghats on the east. (They are called the western Ghats because the are western to India - but eastern to Kerala). The north is more rugged than the south. The button on the left 'your choice' subdivides Kerala into things that may be of specific interest, architecture, art, costume etc. If we have forgotten something of interest please tell us.

From the north to south the 'political' regions are:

Kasaragod
Cannanore
Kozhikode or Calicut
Wayanad
Malappuram
Palakkad or Palghat
Thrissur or Trichur
Emakulam... 'Queen of Arabian Sea'.
Idukki, the High range district of Kerala
Kottayam - a land of unique characteristics.
Allepy - 'Venice of the east'.
Pathnamthitta - a hilly terrain, pristine beauty, a place of worship, more than half is forest, a land of temples, rivers, mountain ranges and coconut groves.
Kollam or Quilon ... the land of the cashews, India's first planned eco tourism centre.
Thiruvananthapuram or Trivandrum, the capital city of Kerala gifted with beautiful backwaters, hills stations, temples palaces, architecture, heritage walk, etc.
Thiruvananthapuram offers the charms of Kerala on a platter - rivers and backwaters crisscrossing its verdant terrain, long golden sand beaches, historic monuments, palaces, museums and towering skyscrapers scattered across its cityscape. The city is a major art centre, literature and culture, as well as being the political and media capital of Kerala.
