Guruvayur

Guruvayur Temple

Guruvayur, a small town in Thrissur district, is one of the most important pilgrim centre of South India, attracting thousands of peoples every day from different part of the country. Located 29km north-west of Thrissur, Guruvayur is famous for the temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, known here as Guruvayoorappan or the Lord of Guruvayur. The temple is many centuries old and a cultural centre where literature and art forms flourish.

The Chembai Sangeetholsavam, The Karnatic Music festival held for eleven days, Guruvayur Elephant Sanctuaryattracts mucsic lovers from different part of the world.

One of the main attraction of Guruvayur is the elephant sanctuary at Punnathur Kotta, a few kilometer away from the temple. More then 60 elephants offered by devotees of the presiding deity are kept here. The life-size statue of an elephant named Guruvayur Kesavan, near the temple, is another attraction.
